mahabis music // the dove and wolf french lounge music
french guitar duo paloma gil and louise hayat-camard were introduced by their parents while on holiday in martinique when they were 14, and started playing music together almost immediately. eight years later, they are the dove & the wolf, and have just released their first ep, a four-song collection of ethereal harmonies melding with softly twanging guitars.
their break came when new york fashion designer gaby basora hired hayat-camard to babysit her sons while in paris for business. they have gradually earned an audience in france and the usa, playing live accoustic sets while working with top stylists and video makers.
the name the dove & the wolf is a multilingual play on their names. 'paloma' is Spanish for `'dove' and ‘loup’ (lou, hayat-camard’s nickname) is french for 'wolf'. most of their tunes, however, are sung in flawless english.
in 2012, they released their first single, which was actually one of the first songs they ever wrote together. entitled springtime, it has sweet, laid-back lyrics against the clanging surf-inspired guitar. it sounds more like byron bay than their native paris, and the video was actually shot in queens, ny.
‘It’s about growing up and leaving the place you’ve always lived in,’ says hayat-camard.
their recently released tune, the words you said, is another song of unrequited love, passing summers, and trying to relive them in your mind. the haunting video directed by zack spiger in ibiza, uses saturated flashbacks, a narrow long field of vision, and zooms in on the rolling landscape.
their music is as much about ambience as anything, essentially kicking back with style.
the dove and the wolf will continue their gentle conquer of the American market later this year, supporting rachael yamagata on tour. learn more about them and their music on their facebook page.
