To tie in with the launch of our new ‘black edition’ summer slipper, we’re taking things over to the dark side and revelling in the beauty of darkness. Here, we share the photography of Martin Rak, who showcases the magnificent shadows of the German Baltic coast.

A lonely shoreline can be just as picturesque as a white sand beach, it’s just a different kind of beauty. This particular beauty comes in its remoteness, the fact that you have this secluded space to yourself. Walking along the shore, whether that involves being barefoot on the sand or scrambling over rocks is the perfect way to unwind.

Beaches that seem to go on forever, stretching out to either side as far as the eye can see and dwindling out to a receded tide. These are the ideal places to go to clear your mind, walk off woes and shrug off stresses.

Don’t let the darkness in these images deter you. Shake off the notion that beaches are lined with white sand and shrouded in cloudless blue skies, and learn to appreciate the tranquillity of the most remote and rugged places that line the shores.

The lack of colour in these monochromatic photographs allows you to focus instead on the lighting. Here, Rak has masterfully captured the areas of light as the sun peers through gaps in the dense clouds, reminding us that not everything is black and white.
