mahabis music // modern folk artist denai moore

born in jamaica and raised in london, singer/songwriter denai moore says 'folk music to me is what you've lived through.' she echoes a smooth and thoughtful version of her blended cultures with a modern folk edge, and we're loving her new music video.

moore has previously collaborated with electronic artist sbtrkt on the track 'the light', which was produced by rodaidh mcdonald (king krule, the xx, bobby womack). however, we love the pure sound of her acoustic tracks the most.

her voice echoes emotive, semi-gospel notes, and whilst producing a powerful sound she appears relaxed, and her singing seems effortless. the song features a choir and layers of guitars with keyboard interludes, but again it's all controlled and working together cohesively, producing a sound that is concise and calm.

the video for the single i swore was directed by ugo mangin and follows a young boy who thinks he’s an adult and confronts his reality. the fascinating clip unwinds like a short-film. in an interview with nowness, mangin compares the main character to someone caught between lord byron and mad max.

so kick off your shoes, put up your feet and delve into some contemplative denai moore.
