mahabis retreats // 'waldhaus', a contemporary cabin in the woods
A far cry from a ramshackle hut, Waldhaus is a contemporary relaxing retreat, situated in a dense pine forest near the German city of Dortmund. The white wood-clad interior creates a soothing and tranquil aesthetic, providing the perfect ambience for unwinding.
Designed by architectural firm Atelier ST, the cabin resembles a more traditional wooden hut upon first impressions, blending effortlessly into its woodland setting. As the evening draws in and darkness descends, light radiates from the large wall-to-wall window at the front of the structure, creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Although only small in size, it is perfectly equipped for a luxurious retreat. Built to resemble a fairy tale house from the exterior, the interior is more luxury apartment than Hansel & Gretel.
The main ground floor area is designed with relaxation in mind. Sink into a chair next to the wood burning stove in the winter, or open the windows and retreat to the spacious porch in warmer weather, and enjoy the uncompromised views of the surrounding woodland. A large opening allows light to shine through to the kitchen, and ensures that those preparing meals can be included in conversation.
Above the porch, a ladder leads up to a discreet mezzanine, where guests can escape to enjoy their own company, perhaps with a good book. At the back of the cabin, a similarly subdued staircase leads up to a private bedroom.
Das Waldhaus is the title of a story by the Brothers Grimm, Germany’s renowned authors of fairy tales. Translating as The Hut in the Forest, this is the perfect name for a structure that so closely evokes childhood fantasies of stumbling across otherworldly places whilst providing the ideal retreat for getting away from it all and unwinding
